Bendigo is a city that beats to the rhythm of sport. From the crowd at Queen Elizabeth Oval to the quiet determination of solo athletes, the spirit of competition and camaraderie thrives. And for over 50 years, the Bendigo Sports Star Awards have been recognising and celebrating the achievements of those who embody this spirit.
The McKern Foundation has supported the Sports Star Awards for several years, as well as Michael donating his time as a Committee Member since 2017.
Since beginning in 1965 the awards are the longest running sports awards in Australia. They have evolved, encompassing not just individual athletes but also teams, coaches, and volunteers who dedicate their time to shaping the sporting landscape of Bendigo.
Ran by a local committee of volunteers, the charity extends being awards nights, with recognition extending to scholarships and sponsorships helping them further their athletic pursuits.
“The Bendigo Sports Star Awards are an outstanding initiative that acknowledges and champions local sporting achievements and identities,” said Michael McKern.
“We all have a part to play in supporting the community and corporate responsibility should be a value that every business works to achieve,” he said.
At McKern Foundation we believe that anyone should have the opportunity to play sport, no matter what their background or circumstances.
In addition to our support to the Awards, we also contribute to the following individuals on their athletic journeys:
> Jenna Strauch – Olympian – Swimming
> Alessia McCaig – National Champion – Cycling
> Mia Harvey – State Basketball Player
